Hydel put on middle distance clinic
LED by Class Three athlete Oshea Cummings out of Trinidad and Tobago, who had double success, Hydel High School girls put on a clinic in middle- and long-distance running at Saturday's Fervet Distance Carnival, at Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College (JC).
Cummings took the Open girls 3000 metres in a meet record 10:34.49. Her teammate Tyrella Duff was a distant second in 11:36.05, with Tashalee Palmer of St Jago third in 11:52.03.
Cummings was even better in the Class Three 1500m, posting a personal best and another meet record to win in 4:52.50. Shanoya Palmer of St Jago was second in 5:10.19, with Kayanna Douglas of Alphansus Davis third in 5:19.36.
The Corey Bennett-coached Hydel dominated the 800m, winning all three classes. Shaneil Henry won Class Three in 2:24.35 ahead of Kayanna Douglas of Alphansus Davis, 2:25.34, and Shannya Palmer of St Jago third in 2:25.42.
Sackaela Whilby was best in Class Two in 2:21.60, defeating Tashana Brown of Alphansus Davis, 2:22.16, and Shameika Davis of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), 2:23.76.
Rihanna Morgan closed out the sweep for Hydel, winning the Class One event in 2:16.09, as Kedreda Coombs of St Jago finished second in 2:17.32, with Shavancia Griffiths of STETHS third in 2:19.38.
Alphansus Davis controlled the Class Two 1500m with a podium sweep, led by Tabbrel Williams in a meet record 4:49.63. Chevelle Whyte was second in 4:51.54 and Aiikey Reynolds third in 4:54.21.
St Jago's boys had a good showing, led by Ryan Achau in the Class One 1500m, winning in 3:59.40. Following his steeplechase win a couple hours earlier at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics, Evans Tetteh of JC had to settle for second in 4:06.28, with Nicholas Fredrick of Alphansus Davis third in 4:09.68.
Khieme Campbell, Phillip Palmer and Danniel Pennant also picked up wins for the Monk Street-based school. Campbell crossed the line first in the Class Two 800m in 1:58.67 ahead of Keneil Daniels of Excelsior High in 1:58.78, and Bevin Davey of JC in 2:00.91.
Palmer was best in the Class Two 1500m in 4:20.99, finishing ahead of Cavel Nooks of JC in 4:22.76.
Pennant won the Open 5000m in a personal best 15:21.94. The Campion College duo Amerii Brightley, 16:12.57, and Jonathan Leiba, 16:51.64, finished second and third, respectively.
Ricardo Lee of JC won the Class Three 1500m in 4:25.50.
There was also an impressive win for Calabar High as Dughauntei Lewis captured the Class One 800m in 1:53.64 ahead of the JC duo of Samuel Creary, 1:54.12, and Carlos Bison Culnez, 1:54.81.
Mickoloy Saunders of JC won the Class Three 800m, clocking 2:05.98 to finish ahead of Bryan Stewart of Excelsior, 2:13.21, and Brandon Bowen of Calabar in 2:13.31.
