Having faced one of the most devastating weather systems in history, Jamaicans have begun trying to pick up the pieces after the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

The sight of detached roofs, smashed vehicles and uprooted crops indicate that the damage costs will be high, especially for residents and business interests in the western end of the island. But despite the carnage, the resilient Jamaican spirit was on show, as neighbours helped each other start the long road to victory.
