KC clip Calabar to reach Walker Cup semis
Kingston College (KC) clipped bitter rivals Calabar High 2-1 yesterday at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium to book their spot in the semifinals of the ISSA Walker Cup knockout competition.
In the opening game of the double header, 10-man Mona High got the better of Hydel High 3-2 to also advance to the semifinals.
Joenaldo Payne (4th minute), Franklyn Mitcham (70th) and Sean Leighton (73rd) secured the win for the defending champions Mona.
Javel Watson (40th) and Ackeem Ewan (77th) were Hydel's goalscorers on the day.
In the afternoon's feature game, KC took the lead in the seventh minute of the contest as Rohan Brown opened the scoring.
Payton Larmond pulled Calabar level in the 13th minute but KC quickly retook the lead in the 16th minute when Shareef Ricketts scored the game's winner.
It was a hotly contested match as both teams created their fair share of opportunities to take the win.
With just seven minutes on the clock, KC struck early as Brown rose high to head the ball on target which was misread by goalkeeper Kimmar Brown.
The lions of Red Hills Road roared back in the 13th minute as Larmond timed a late run into the box to pick up the ball in space and fired into the bottom left corner.
It was a flurry of goals in the opening minutes as just two minutes later, KC would retake the lead, this time through Ricketts.
Ricketts intercepted a loose pass by Calabar's midfield and let fly a low-drive effort from 30 yards one that was just out of the reach of goalkeeper Brown.
The game intensified into end-to-end action as both teams went searching for more goals.
Calabar's Jaheim Rankine struck a free kick in the first half that nearly fell into the lap of his teammate O'Bryan Marks after a goalkeeping error but KC were quick to clear their lines.
Deshawn Byfield had a look at goal at the half hour mark but his effort whistled wide of the post.
BIG WINS
In the other two games played at the Ashenheim Stadium, St Catherine High and Charlie Smith High recorded big wins on their way to the semifinals.
St Catherine drubbed Vauxhall 5-2 in the opening encounter while in the curtain closer, Charlie Smith turned back Tivoli Gardens 6-1 in dominant fashion.
Mona will next face Charlie Smith in the semifinals of the Walker Cup while St Catherine booked a date against KC.
The semifinals are set to be played tomorrow at the Ashenheim Stadium, with the final set for Friday, December 19 at the National Stadium.
